“Over the next five years our strategy is now to seek organic growth,” said Gareth Jefferson. There have been lots of acquisitions in recent times, but at some point, you have to seek
organic growth. This brings us back to the subject of centres of excellence. We are now looking at expanding into different sectors. One of the areas we are looking at in Lydney is conveyor belting, which is not carried out at other HEXPOL sites. Matting is also a growing market for us.

In terms of products for the retreading sector, Berwin produces compounds covering applications in agricultural, truck, passenger, earthmover and well as ancillary materials, with key strengths in truck and agricultural as well as in the hot cure sector. According to Clive Rickards, the company defines itself as a solution provider to customers, approaching the bespoke concerns of clients in technical areas.
“Our focus is on marketing our service and getting credit for creating real value for money with high-end products,” says Rickards. “We are currently growing at 7-10% per year in
terms of volume with an increased footprint in mainland Europe and the Middle East.” On the CV side the company is particularly focused on developing higher mileage and lower rolling resistance compounds to provide better fuel economy.
Another key change that the acquisition has brought with it is an increased focus on environmental sustainability and a stated commitment to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
