Oliver Opens Outlet in South Carolina
Oliver Rubber, the Michelin subsidiary, has opened its first retreading outlet in South Carolina, at Tire Town in Horry County.
In the past, Tire Town used to have to send local commercial tyres to other areas for retreads. However, the company helped create East Coast Retread Manufacturing and now the products stay local.
"We now can do it here, with our standards, under our supervision, and get them back to (the customers) much quicker," Chris King, Tire Town General Manager said.
The new factory does not just cut out the middle man.
"We're keeping the business in Horry County, the money in Horry County, and we've hired five new employees in the plant," General Manager Mike Bodway said.
“But,” Chris King said, “the factory is not just about the business; it's also about the environment as
the retreading process is the only real way to delay the disposal issues with old tyres. We take the old tread that may be left on it off, and that can then be used for rubber mulch, equestrian facilities, rubber anti-fatigue mats. There's a plethora of different uses for it." The factor y follows standards set by Oliver Rubber Company, which Bodway said helps ensure the highest quality.
"We have our hands on, we have the control of the quality, we have more control of what's happening to the tyres," Bodway said.
So whether they are stripping tyres down, or repairing them, the new factory aims to help local industry continue to grow.
"Everything can stay local, the products, the money, the resources," Bodway explained.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has expanded its Goodyear Authorized Retread network with the addition of Colonial Tire Distributors, a Richmond, Virginia- based firm that serves trucking fleets with new Goodyear commercial truck tyres, Goodyear retreads, and other products and services. Colonial Tire Distributors, a subsidiary of Colonial Truck Co., which was founded in 1966, sells new Goodyear commercial truck tyres and Goodyear retreads at three locations in Virginia: Richmond, Ashland and Tidewater.
Its fully equipped retread plant in Richmond produces premium, high- quality Goodyear precure retreads, including the G572, the G316 AT, and others, according to Colonial Tire Distributors President Bob Barkley. The company also offers 24/7 emergency roadside assistance through the Goodyear-FleetHQ business solutions program.
“Most of our customers are small- to-mid-size trucking companies, and we do some large fleet work, as well,” says Barkley. “Regardless of their size, fleets want premium products and services that help them lower their overall operating costs.”
Barkley has seen an increase in
demand for retreads over the last few years, which made joining the Goodyear Authorized Retread network that much more attractive. “Goodyear has been wonderful to work with. The company’s products and services are top-notch, and the technical and sales support that it provides enables us to serve our customers more effectively.
“We strive to be a full-service provider to the trucking industry. Our connection to Goodyear gives us an important advantage over our competitors.”
“For many years, this excellent organisation has represented us extremely well on the new tyre and service side,” says Todd Labbe, general manager, retread sales, Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems. “We are delighted that Mr. Barkley and his management team have selected Goodyear to supply Colonial Tire Distributors with retread products. We look forward to continuing to help Colonial Tire Distributors serve its customer base.”
