         NEWS EXTRA
TIA Launching Twice Monthly Online Webinars
The Tire Industry Association (TIA) is initiating a twice monthly online webinar series to help its current and future members learn how to stay ahead of the competition. Webinar attendees do not have to be a TIA member to participate in the online webinars.
"TIA membership has a significant array of member benefits that provide a variety of opportunities for tyre dealers to gain that competitive edge, including risk management and TPMS resources. This new webinar series will help tyre industry professionals take their business to the next level," said TIA Director of Membership Wilson Beach. The webinars will last 30 minutes and will be on the first and third Wednesdays of every month at
1pm (Eastern), 12pm (Central), 11am (Mountain) and 10am (Pacific) to accommodate as many tyre dealers from coast-to-coast as possible during regular business hours.
The first webinar on March 7th was presented by Federated Insurance and focused on "Minimising Risk - an Overview of Federated's Designated Risk Manager Training." The Risk Manager Training Program, which began in 2002, was developed to target the unique needs of tyre dealerships’ risk management concerns. The resulting reduction in losses for companies that have attended the full, in person seminar, in the past has been an on average reduction of loss frequency and severity between 20 and 30 per cent.
University Proves Poor Maintenance Cause of
Tread Loss
Yet another set of research has proven that discarded truck tyre treads on the highway are not down to retreading. According to the department of Polymer Engineering at the University of Minho in Portugal, their research showed that half of the treads found on Portuguese roads comes from new tyres, suggesting that the cause of such tread separations is not simply down to the retreading process. The research, requested by ANIRP, showed that the main cause of problems was poor maintenance, accident damage and inadequate pressure and this impacted as much to new tyres as it did to retreads.
The research had the support of Valorpneu and had contributions from Aenor, Breeze, Scutvias and Galpgest. The project “ Hunting the Crocodile ” aimed at to identify the causes of the imperfections of tyres and to contribute to greater road security. They collected and exhaustingly analysed all “road alligators” from the roads serving the research area. In total some 1000 tyres treads were inspected. The investigation showed that 55 per cent came from recapped tyres and 45 per cent from new tyres.
It was also noted that in 8 per cent of the situations there had been extreme
damage to the tyres and in 98 per cent of cases the tyre had been repaired, if not retreaded.
“The results of this study are similar to those seen in similar studies in other countries. Recapped tyres are around 30 per cent cheaper. Retreading is economically and environmentally correct and it is well known that aircraft generally use retreaded tyres and those tyres stand up to extremes of temperature and abuse”, says the leader of ANIRP. Jose Gomes agrees that this is a good alternative to the use of imported used tyres.
ANIRP concluded that although retreaded tyres cost on average 30 per cent less than new, and sometimes as much as 57 per cent of the cost of new tyres, they still needed to be properly maintained, just as new tyres have to be properly maintained for poor maintenance is the key cause of tyre failure. The organisation also noted that retreaded tyres account for 47 per cent of those fitted to trucks and buses, and just 2 per cent to passenger vehicles.
