  PHIL ROBINSON:
COUNTRY
REPORT - UK
CHAMPIONING EDUCATION AND SUPPORT IN THE TYRE RETREADING SECTOR
Phil Robinson, the Senior Country Manager for Marangoni in the UK, Ireland, and the Middle East, dedicates himself to elevating understanding and support within the tyre-retreading industry. He has recently been on a drive to benefit the whole industry by focusing on dispelling myths and sharing key insights, thereby influencing perceptions about the safety and efficacy of retreads.
In an industry sometimes clouded by misconceptions, especially regarding safety, Robinson provides clarity based on stringent in- dustry standards and robust research. He has been on a mission to educate fleet customers that properly maintained retreaded tyres are as safe as new ones, underscored by adherence to rigorous processes during retreading.
Robinson emphasises the importance of educating customers to mitigate concerns such as the longevity and reliability of retread- ed tyres. His points are supported by numerous reports that oth- ers can use to support the development of the industry globally, including the 2019 ETRM report showing that retreaded tyres can achieve up to 660,000 km with two retreads, challenging the myth that they have a shorter lifespan than new tyres. Similarly, he addresses safety worries and is backed up by a detailed 2012 U.S. Department of Transportation study, which found that factors like tread depth and inflation pressure significantly affect tyre safety
rather than whether the tyre is new or retreaded.
Through his leadership, Robinson underscores the benefits of the retreading process, not just in terms of cost efficiency and perfor- mance but also from an environmental standpoint. He advocates for the sustainability of retreading, noting that it significantly re- duces waste and environmental impact—a fact supported again by ETRM findings highlighting up to 70% lower environmental im- pacts compared to non-retreadable tyres.
Phil Robinson’s commitment to the retreading sector goes beyond just advocating for its practices; he actively contributes to building a better understanding and recognition of the value retreads bring to the transportation industry. His expert insights and dedication help fleet operators make informed decisions, reinforcing the po- sition of retreaded tyres as a reliable, safe, and sustainable choice in global markets.
