NAVI MUMBAI MUNICIPAL TRANSPORT INSTALLS ELGI RETREAD UNIT

Indian retread machinery producer Elgi Rubber Company Limited has installed a new tyre retreading plant at Navi Mumbai Munic- ipal Transport (NMMT), the transport wing of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
According to NMMT’s website, the state-owned city bus service spends in between INR 6-7 million on tyre retreading for its 475
buses annually. The company believes that installing a captive unit would further increase the usage of tyres as well as making it self-reliant in retreading its own bus tyres.
“We have supplied a captive unit to NMMT as well as training their staff in the tyre retreading process,” informed Shankar Vadivel S, Director, Elgi Rubber Company Limited. To equip the facility Elgi provided NMMT with an autoclave, inspection spreader, buffer and builder. “We have also supplied a 4-tyre chamber for retread- ing 150-200 tyres each month,” added Vadivel.
NMMT invested around INR 2.2 million in procuring the plant machinery, which has a shelf-life of about 10 years. Currently, the company spends about INR 5,500 on retreading each tyre, which their previous vendor took about 21 days to retread and deliver. The installation of the captive plant will help NMMT to reduce the cost of retreading to INR 4,000 each tyre, with less downtime and increased usage of premium rubber.
Currently, NMMT retreads about 700 tyres annually. The new fa- cility, which is now operational, was inaugurated by Civic Chief Ra- jesh Narvekar at the Asudgaon depot located in the Navi Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
