exhibitors from the Indian tyre and allied industries and RMI from its member base.
“We are exploring an association with SingEx to bring tyre, equipment and car parts firms to the Johannesburg event next year,” informed Jakkie Olivier, Chief Executive Officer, RMI. A three-member delegation visited the Tyrexpo India at Chennai to gather a first-hand impression of the show.
Currently, the South African Capital Johannesburg holds two major automobile aftermarket shows, namely Automechanika and Festival of Motoring. Considering the considerable base provided by the Indian & South African tyre and auto aftermarket, Tyrexpo Africa could become a flagship event in the region.
The tyre show would continue to be organised bi-annually in the South African capital.
RMI believes SingEx in cooperation with tyre industry bodies like the All India Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) and its links in the tyre industry could bring exhibitors to the South African show.
“The show should invite industry experts to hold appropriate conferences addressed by top-line speakers to speak on the latest technology and trends,” said Hedley Judd, Association Director. On how far the discussions have reached and by when the decision would be finalised on any eventual cooperation, Jakkie added, “We are likely to take the final decision in October on whether it is going to happen or not.”
SingEx India Exhibitions Pvt Ltd, which was assigned to organise the Tyrexpo Africa show about three months ago, has also confirmed they are holding talks with RMI with regards to arranging the Johannesburg event. Soon, a two-member delegation
from the India office is planning to visit South Africa to work out
the modalities of the proposed cooperation with RMI. Commenting on the South African market; the organisation members said they believe the profitability in the business is continuing to fall, regulator y compliance is getting stricter in the last couple of years, and the cost of business is increasing. “Domestic sales are down, but exports are improving,” stated Judd.
The members blame the ongoing subdued business scenario on government policies.
RMI has a membership of 7 500, providing a compelling collective voice that gives members considerable clout in negotiating
better trading conditions. As the lead voice in the motor industry, the RMI is a member-driven organisation that continually seeks solutions to concerns raised by members in the day-to-day running of their businesses. Members needs are serviced through six regional offices, manned by 83 professional staff. Besides, the RMI is the primary employer representative of the Motor Industr y Bargaining Council, playing a significant role in labour negotiations as well as industr y social benefit schemes, dispute resolution processes and exemption procedures.
