bring down the cost of ownership for clients to the lowest level,” explained Durai Ganesh R, Deputy General Manager, Myers India Limited.
Myers believes the ongoing slowdown has hit the retreading sector hard as retread output is down by 40%. The situation is so dire, the company says, that the smallest tyre plants are selling-off their businesses to larger sites, producing 1,000 retreads per month or more.
“Actually, only those retreading operations are afloat, where promotors are financially sound and can operate on long-term
credit business,” said Ganesh. Improving road networks and the increasing share of radials are also not proving to be helpful for the industry. “Now wear and tear is low, and tyre repairs are also becoming meagre,” he added. When asked where Myers is focusing right now, Ganesh said, “We are focusing on institutional sales so that requirements for the entire tyre care process can be sourced from us, which is our core competency.”
The company is now promoting itself as one that offers everything under one roof to the fleet- owners. “We now offer a complete

package of tyre solutions including retreading, treads, repairs and consumables,” he emphasised.
Market conditions may well be at their lowest ebb, but the cost of running operations continues to rise. Both tyre repair and retreading services have been levied with 18% GST, but the unorganised sector continues to evade this tax. “The organised sector is having to cut corners to run its factories, while the unorganised sector offers
retreading at competitive pricing, making things more difficult for the organised sector,” complained Ganesh.
Myers India Limited is a joint venture between TVS Group and Myers Industries, USA. The enterprise produces tyre repair patches under the ‘Kwik’ brand in Chennai (Tamil Nadu). The venture provides a complete range of tyre and tube repair materials for any size of injury, from pinhole repairs in tubes to section repairs in giant tyres.
The Indian subsidiary of the Singapore headquartered SingEx has made significant progress this year by attracting several of the major tyre companies to the annual event. SingEx Exhibitions (India) Pvt Ltd, which is now independently organising the Indian edition of the show, succeeded in introducing Apollo Tyres, MRF and JK Tyres to the Chennai edition for the first time
to the event, which took place between 26th – 28th September 2019 at the Chennai Trade Center.
On the other hand, major off- road tyre producer Balkrishan Tyre Limited (BKT), who had exhibited at all the earlier editions of the show, was conspicuously absent this time. Despite major tyre producers exhibiting at the show, the
