RETREADING CONFERENCE
Retreading Conference Bologna – Outakes
distant from the traditional retread operation’s aims and methods, but in a modern world, everything seems to be connected, and driving home the sustainable goals of retreading is an essential element of the business where we do not perform well – see Sustainability is not Recycling p30 of this issue.
Since 2014, the EU has been driving towards the Circular Economy, and whether we ascribe to that strategy or not, that is the background that we are working in. The EU’s COM 398 has pushed for a 30% increase in resource
productivity. Com 614 saw the creation of 54 actions on production/consumption/ waste management and the market for secondary raw materials; plus four Directives on increasing waste recycling to 65% by 2035.
In 2016 the circular economy totalled: (according to Eurostat) • 4 million workers
• 17.5 billion € investments
• 147 billion € added value But.....
• Recycled material has a share of only 12% on the total demand of material – in the tyre sector this is much lower, maybe as low as 3%.
The Retread Conference at Bologna, organised by Retreading Business and Autopromotec was a huge success, the one-day event being built around a small group of key speakers, who attracted an audience of around 130 delegates.
One of the most interesting presentations was an overview of the current retread market, in a circular economy, in Italy. Franco D’Amore, VP and Director of the Energy Area for
the Istituto per la Competitività, presented some interesting details in a European context and an Italian basis as well.
In terms of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Retreading meets criteria 9,11 – 15; covering, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Production and Consumption, Climate Action, Life Below Water and Life on Land.
These may seem somewhat
Rising to the
challenges
of tomorrow.
