Continental Begins Retread Rubber Production at Mount Vernon Plant
Continental has announced the addition of a Pre-Cured Tread (PCT) manufacturing facility to its existing campus in Mount Vernon, Illinois in the USA. The new plant, which began start-up production in January, will produce made-in-the-USA tread
ergonomically efficient workspace,” said John Barnes, Continental’s head of ContiLifeCycle retreading for the Americas. “As a technology company, we’re always looking to see what’s next on the horizon, whether for manufacturing or
rubber for the ContiTread premium retread line. Continental expects the plant to reach full operation by the end of the first quarter of 2018.
The new tread rubber facility features a technologically advanced manufacturing process to maximise safety for plant personnel and quality of the pre- cured tread rubber. A specialised cooling tower helps to stabilise the tread compound more quickly, and robotic assistance on the tread press helps prevent distortion of the product for more consistent filling of the mould. We want to deliver the best value to our customers by capitalising on the latest innovations in the industry.” “Continental continuously strives for best-in-class performance. The cornerstone of this performance is commitment to outstanding quality,” added Catherine Loss, Continental’s head of retread worldwide. “When designing this new Pre-Cured Tread plant, we focused on utilising lessons learned from our existing plant in Morelia, Mexico, to optimise the layout and flow of the plant, and our long years’ of manufacturing experience in the main Mount Vernon plant to ensure reliability and repeatability in the production.”
The first tread patterns being produced at the Mount Vernon PCT plant will be ContiTread HDL EcoPlus, ContiTread HDL, and ContiTread HDR1.
We are very sad to announce that Mike Scanlon, the retired editor and publisher of the UK industry magazine Tyre Trade News passed away in his sleep on Thursday 18 January.
Mike was a larger-than-life figure in the tyre publishing sphere and always approached his worked with a boundless energy and enthusiasm. His greatest strengths were a very clear understanding of his magazine’s position in the market, and a strong commitment to serving
his customers. If there was ever a press event to be attended, you would always see Mike there, and it was this devotion to his clients, which has been the base for the strong sense of customer loyalty enjoyed by Tyre Trade News to this day.
In recent years health problems curtailed Mike’s ability to be as involved in the market as he would have liked, and the industry was a less colourful place for his absence.
At Retreading Business we have always had a very close connection with Mike, as our publisher David Wilson
worked closely with him and his wife, Mary, as editor of Tyre Trade News between 1993 and 1996, helping to establish the magazine within the UK tyre sector.
Mike was also a shareholder in the European Retreading Review, which was published in 1994 and 1995, and was the forerunner of Retreading Business magazine.
Our deepest sympathies go to Mary, Mark, Jane, and the rest of the Scanlon family as well as to Mike’s friends and colleagues.

Confirming this rating, the Group’s Chairman, Vittorio Marangoni was recently asked to present the best practices of the company to an influential audience at the head offices of Confindustria, an important Italian event dedicated to the circular economy. Among those
present at the event was Patrizia Greco, Chairperson of Enel; Neil Palomba, General Manager of Costa Crociere; Francesco Farinetti, founder and Managing Director of Eataly; Gabriella Scarpa, Chairperson of Bulgari; and many others. Not surprisingly, to emphasise the exceptional nature of the event, the conference was opened by Ministers Carlo Calenda (Economic Development) and Gianluca Galletti (Environment).
In the survey carried out by Statista, a total sample of over 15,000 workers from companies with over
