Tyromer Offers Devulcanised Rubber for Retreads
on the UK market at prices that were tantamount to dumping. Speaking at the launch of an environmental regulations report by the Aldersgate Group on 7 December, Willson said: “A haulage fleet deploying a tyre policy based on single-life throwaway tyres uses more than four times as many tyres to cover the same mileage compared with one using premium tyres and retreading.
“As a result, the UK must now dispose of an additional 500,000
end-of-life truck tyres every year. Placed side by side, these would reach almost all round the M25 motorway.
“The phenomenon has also resulted in a 27 per cent increase in UK natural rubber consumption used in truck tyres. Natural rubber is an EU-critical raw material.”
manufacturer and supplies a Canadian retreader with raw materials for industrial tyres.
Now Tyromer, which has two production facilities is bringing the product to the US retread market. Tyromer’s tyre-derived polymer or TDP is claimed to increase performance when incorporated into a pre-cure tread compound and costs less than virgin material. For mould-cure, Tyromer has partnered with Airboss Rubber Compounding to provide customised batches to meet specific needs.
The TDP, already used in OTR applications, can replace a pre-cure tread compound at 20 per cent+ and is entirely made of recycled material.
The company’s vision, according to TRIB, is to soon close the loop and make tyres a circular economy where scrap tyre rubber can be turned into new tyres in significant amounts. Tyromer will be attending the upcoming 2018 TIA OTR Tire Conference.
Presti Introduces SureSeal Ring 16.5/16.0
Canadian based Tyromer Inc., has commercialised a process developed at Wellington University to devulcanise rubber to create a re- uasable polymer that is suitable for use in new rubber compounds.
The company already has contracts to supply its Tyromer devulcanised rubber to a major Chinese tyre
In February 2017, Presti Industries started shipping its new SureSeal Ring size 16.5/16.0. Presti originally started producing its SureSeal Rings in 2005. The SureSeal Ring is an “active-seal” rimless system which is 100 per cent compatible with Bandag’s ARC System.
Barry Presti, Managing Partner at Presti Industries explained the difference between Bandag’s original ARC System and the Presti SureSeal, “In my opinion Bandag revolutionised the retreading industry in the late 1980s when they launched their (patented) ARC System. The ARC System enabled Bandag retreaders to decrease cycle times, which made them significantly more productive, lowered costs and improved profitability. The ARC System
is one of the technological edges Bandag had over its competitors and contributed significantly to their decades of market ominance.
Bandag developed the original ARC rubber ring for their low temperature system (100°C). The original ARC rubber ring was compression mould with a seamed joint to form the ring. The Presti SureSeal Rubber Ring is formulated to work in both high and low temperature systems. The SureSeal is an injection moulded seamless rubber ring. The SureSeal will outperform Bandag’s original ARC ring by more than three- one in a low temperature system. We now manufacture the SureSeal Ring in 24.5/24.0, 22.5/22.0, 20.0, 19.5, 17.5/17.0 & 16.5/16.0 rim sizes.
TBC Adds to Sailun Truck Tyre Line
TBC Corp.'s TBC Brands business unit is adding a regional all-position radial truck tyre to the Sailun brand it distributes in the U.S.
The new tyre, S668, is designed for "severe" trailer applications, according to TBC. It features contoured shoulders to withstand
lateral scrubbing and a "highly durable" rubber compound to extend service life in high-scrub trailer applications.
It launches in four sizes — 11R22.5; 11R24.5; 295/75R22.5; and 255/70R22.5 — and is backed by a six-year warranty for workmanship and materials and a casing retread warranty for up to two retreads.
Sailun's design approach means the S668 can be used for multi-axle and spread-axle trailers, TBC said.
Bill Dashiell, senior vice president, TBC Brands commercial tyre division, said the new product "provides best-in-class support services and reinforces our commitment to continued growth and excellence."
BTMA Blame Chinese Tyres for Retread Crisis
The British Tyre Manufacturers Association (BTMA), at a presentation to the Aldersgate Group, warned that an influx of short-lived cheap tyres from Asia has contributed to a 500,000 increase in the number of end-of-life
truck tyres each year.
The import of cheap Chinese tyres, according to Graham Willson, chief executive of the BTMA, had resulted in a drop of around 30 per cent in the market share for retreaded tyres in the UK. These tyres were arriving
