Winter Tyres for Malaysia
no deaths and no bystanders were injured, but the three men arrested each showed signs of injury, including one of the men having been blinded by the explosion.
Police Public Relations Commissioner Martinus Sitompul, said three suspected terrorists were arrested in Central Java related to the explosion
that occurred in the tyre retreading shop on December 18, 2016.
The suspects made an attempt to hide the explosion and gave neighbours a cover story.
The Police believe that the three were members of a newly formed terrorist cell, all three are currently in custody undergoing “intense interrogation”.
A former employee of a retreader in Shah Alam, Malaysia, has blown the whistle on what he claims is an illegal practice by some retreading plants. The whistleblower claims that the company imports two or three containers of used tyres each month, most of these are marked as winter tyres.
"Each tyre for use in snow will have a
logo or a sign on the side of the tyre, but it will be deleted by the factory workers.
"That prevents the authorities from identifying the casings as being unsuitable winter tyres and they can be retreaded as normal.” He claimed. It is alleged that there are some 200 illegal tyre retreaders in Malaysia who do not comply with the SIRIM
regulations. The claimant says that the factories cannot obtain SIRIM recognition because their working practices are not good enough. He added, that he believed that so long as there were cost savings for the transporters, they would continue to buy these illegal tyres.
Kraiburg Extends 3PMSF Product Range
The "3PMSF" (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) tyre symbol has been certifying enhanced traction and braking action for a good year now. It is now linked under ECE-109 R Annex 10 for the first time with a performance text on retreads and says far more than the classic "M+S" based on classifications devised by the manufacturers.
Kraiburg Austria has subjected seven more winter patterns to a 3PMSF test in order to enhance the competitiveness of truck retreads. The designs in question were the K47, K54, K207, K208, K224, K701 and the K702.
The results are impressive: all the patterns of the retreading specialist demonstrate at least 25 per cent better traction than the standard reference tyre – and have therefore also earned the snowflake symbol. "Our quality materials guarantee performance and safety," said Christoph Priewasser, Product Manager at Kraiburg Austria. "We are delighted that we now have a recognised symbol to prove the quality of our products. Our retreaders can, of course, look up the detailed test results at any time on our website and contact our Technical Service Centre as usual if they have any other questions."

The German Government Supports Retreads
After the last year's halt to assistance to retreading, the German federal government is once again supporting retreaded truck tyres. “This is good news”, says retreader Christian Stiebling. “Since the beginning of 2017, the financial support for the retreading of truck tyres has been funded once more by the federal government. Thus, jobs are secured, the company can push forward further plans.”
As a reminder, the promotion is part of a subsidy for the German transport industry. In so doing, revenue from truck tolls is used to financially support freight forwarders implementing measures to increase safety or protect the environment. The purchase of retreaded truck tyres is now also subsidised, which makes them cheaper than new tyres.
Stiebling produces around 12,000 tyres per year, which is a mainstay of the business model. But this subsidy was discontinued for 2016, and the Bundesrechnungshof did not see any positive effects for the
environment in retreaded truck tyres at that time. For Christian Stiebling - and the retreading industry – this was incomprehensible. The production of the retreaded tyres consumes significantly less oil, and the consumption of the raw materials is, by far, smaller. And as far as the properties are concerned, the TÜV recently confirmed that the rolling resistance was better than for many new tyres. Nevertheless, the Federal Court of Auditors rejected further.
Hans-Jürgen Drechsler, Managing Director of the German Federation of Tire Dealers and Vulkaniseur- Handwerk, (BRV) comments on the resumption of funding as "extremely positive". This should help the industry recover.
Christian Stiebling is relieved that his company has once again significantly increased the production of retread tyres at the beginning of the year. The first sales under the subsidy programme were already under way.
