                         Salco Opens Spanish Retread Operations
An investment by Spanish retreader Salco is considered as a boost in relations between the Salco Group and Goodyear, with the Salco Group developing a new line of business and a complementary service to its professional customers.
The new plant has more than 150 square metres of production room, with a planned expansion of 800 metres for storage, quality control and warehousing. Its production is limited to Goodyear Unicircle, faithfully following processes specified by the brand.
The Salco Group and Goodyear have a long standing relationship of
collaboration and the development of this new plant brings benefits to the customers of both companies. The factory has the capacity to produce up to 5,000 tyres per year depending on demand and customer needs. Tyre performance of a Unicircle tyre is close to that of a new tyre, thanks to low rolling resistance and high mileage, which means that the cost per km is kept low.
The plant inauguration, held on 18 February, was attended by Pablo Martinez, Director of the commercial vehicle business unit of Goodyear Dunlop Iberia and José María Sanz,
manager of the nationwide retreading network for the tyre company. Representing the Salco Group were its honorary president
Fidel Salinas, the current manager Agustín Salinas, and other company officials.
           TNU Promotes Tyre Retreading
Spanish tyre recycling agency TNU, has recently promoted retreading as a way of saving water. This unusual approach to retreading highlights the fact that retreading four tyres saves the equivalent of the annual consumption of water by a single person in Spain.
TNU, explains that a discarded tyre represents a wasted asset. Retreading the tyre saves oil, rubber, steel, zinc and other chemicals. It also saves an
enormous amount of energy put into making the casing of the tyre that should not always only be used once. What is new to the argument though, is that TNU claim that the manufacture of just four new tyres (it does not specify what kind) uses around 7,000 litres of water. So, by retreading four truck tyres, for example, around 3,500 litres of water can be saved.
In those parts of Europe where we
have more wet days than dry we might tend to shrug off such a concept, but in increasingly arid areas, such as Spain and Italy, for example, this is the equivalent of the annual water consumption of an adult. So a quite considerable saving and one that can make a real difference when the reservoirs run dry.
TNU tells its Spanish market, “If we add up all the water saved by
retreading in 2014, that amounts to about 800 million litres, the equivalent of over 100,000 fire trucks or more than 300 Olympic swimming pools – making the saving something to be considered. TNU concludes that retreading tyres saves the casings and is an effective solution for both the economy and the environment.
