Tyrexpo Africa 2014 opened itself to the public from 4 to 6 March at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was the first opportunity for new owners, Singex, to get a feel for what they need to do in order to
Exhibitors were also reported to be pleased with the improved quality of the visitors, and many of them transacted larger volumes of business this year.
In truth, though, the event was a learning curve for Singex, and the
at the Africa show in recent years (although the Asia and India events were ver y well supported by the retreading sector).
The main tread rubber suppliers exhibiting at the show were local manufacturer Leader Tread, who was introducing a number of new treads, Indian manufacturer Elgi and the quickly expanding Chinese supplier, Jianxin. There was also a strong Italian contingent at the show, with Salvadori, CIMA and Matteuzzi all being present. Nonetheless, it has to be said that
concept, and we intend to build on this foundation and take the Tyrexpo series to greater heights over the next few years”. Singex will continue to capitalise on the strong growth opportunities of South Africa’s tyre industry, and is looking at the possibility of expanding the size of the event by introducing related verticals to offer a more comprehensive suite of offering under one roof for exhibitors and visitors alike in 2016. Plans are also in place to bring the Tyrexpo series of shows to other continents
achieve their planned expansion of the portfolio of tyre exhibitions that they purchased from Paul Farrant and Rowena Suthers last year.
The show certainly lived up to its reputation as the major tyre event of the year on the African continent, attracting 134 exhibitors and around 1200 visitors from 17 countries. The organisers put considerable resources into improving the local visitor rate at the show, and certainly attendance held up well compared to previous years, and it is likely attendance would have been much better, were it not for the rainy weather which persisted throughout the show. According to Singex, the event was well received by the attendees and over 70 per cent of visitors claimed to have strongly recommended the show to their business associates.
organisers will no doubt have been made aware of the key areas the show needs to improve upon. The main issue was the imbalance in exhibitors, with two-thirds of all exhibitors coming from China. This problem was compounded by a slower than normal take-up by local exhibitors who found that the show had been fully booked up when it came to book their stands. This is something that the new owners have taken on board and they have committed to tr ying to restore a better balance between exhibitors and will be targeting a higher number of local exhibitors next time. One way to expand the show may well be to focus on improving specific niche areas within the tyre market, a move which potentially may benefit the retreading industry, support from which has been mixed
the potential of this show for the retreading sector is much higher than the current profile of the sector, and it is to be hoped that the new ownership will provide the

Overall though, the positive outcomes experienced at the show were reported to be heartening to Singex. Said Mr Aloysius Arlando, CEO of Singex, who was there to open the show, “ECI has developed a very strong and sustainable
