New ContiTread Retread Facility Opens
investment of $1.1 million to get the business up and running, with total investment to reach about $2.5 million by the time the plant's at full capacity.
The pre-project talks extended to over a year in order to make sure that both Snyder and Conti were happy with the package. Located in Fort Mill, South Carolina., DLS Retreading will be able to service the South Carolina market with retreaded truck tyres, emergency road service, truck tyre service and provide new Continental and General brand truck tyres. Continental has committed to providing marketing, engineering and sales support to help DLS Retreading succeed in its new market.
“We’ve been committed to help DLS Retreading with this new venture from the beginning,” said Paul Williams, executive vice president for truck tyres. “They understand the benefits of providing retreads that meet the needs of the market with the same performance and designs as the new tyres. DLS Retreading has been a great ambassador already for Continental products, and we look forward to helping DLS continue its success.”
With more than 16,000 square feet and 11 service docks, the operation will employ more than 50 workers. Additionally, the facility is the first of Continental’s licensees in the U.S. to be a completely new
retreading venture, with no pre- existing operations. The plant started trial production June 1 and is operating at about 40 to 60 tyres a day in the start-up phase, Mr. Snyder said, with one curing chamber. Long term the plant should expand to three chambers, expanding capacity to about 300 tyres a day
Mr. Snyder said he expects the business to be generating $1 million a month in sales by the year-end, and he said that he has a "very aggressive growth plan" for the next five years. DLS Retreading will be selling new Continental- and General- brand truck tyres along with the Contitread retreads, he said, and will recruit a team of associate dealers as well.
For Continental, establishing this company in Fort Mill reflects a need for a quality dealer/retreader in the Carolinas and they have found a reliable partner in Mr. Snyder, according to Paul Williams, executive vice president, commercial vehicle tyres. Having the plant in Fort Mill so close to Conti's North American headquarters also provides a convenient platform for training new employees and showing potential LifeCycle licensees a working shop, he added.
Continental Tire the Americas recently opened DLS Retreading Inc., its first all-new ContiTread licensed truck tyre retreading facility. Long time commercial tyre and retread industry veteran Scott Snyder founded DLS Retreading Inc. in Fort Mill, an independent commercial tyre dealership and ContiLifeCycle retread licensee.
