improving production efficiency. Companies in the tyre industry manufacture new tyres, inner tubes, and materials for tyre repair and retreading, primarily from synthetic and natural rubber. Tyre manufacturers may specialize by type of vehicle or size of tyre, such as for cars, trucks, airplanes, farm equipment, or children's vehicles. They may also specialize by type of
tyre: pneumatic (inflatable); solid; or semi-pneumatic, and may make tire repair and retreading materials.
The top revenue-producing products are tyres for passenger cars (about 45 per cent of industry revenue); trucks and buses (30 per cent); and tractor, farm and industrial vehicles (5 per cent). About 300 million tyres are produced in the US each year.
Environmental police officers in Sao Paulo recently carried out checks on a number of tyre repair shops and retreaders. They found one repairer and one retreader who were operating without a licence and who were disposing of their waste in an illegal manner.
This has been taken as an indication that Brazilian authorities are tightening their controls on tyre waste and tyre operations.
The two companies have been temporarily closed until they can show that they will comply with environmental conditions. They have 30 days from the date of the inspection to put their houses in order.
The owners of these businesses will be held responsible for any environmental crimes.
The Environment police will be moving on to other cities to repeat the monitoring in the coming months.

The car retread market is suffering from an onslaught from many sectors, the import of low cost Chinese tyres has pressurised the car sector, and recently a declaration from Bridgestone’s Brazilian product manager that car tyres are not suitable for retreading has further pressurised the sector and attracted attention to the market in the press in Brazil, Germany, Malaysia and Spain. However, Spanish Elche-based TNU has run tests on retreaded and new car tyres and has established that properly manufactured car retread tyres are no less safe than new car tyres.
TNU is a non-profit company and in the past year recorded the retreading of some 521 tonnes of tyres in Elche. A company spokesman said that the high volume was due to the size of the local market and the local acceptance of retreaded car tyres.
He said that the poor reputation was the result of an urban myth and that there were in fact cost benefits when compared to new tyres, and safety was not compromised at all.
He emphasised that in Europe car tyre retreaders were subject to the same rigorous testing as new tyre manufacturers with regards to security, durability, mileage, noise levels and adhesion in the wet.
He also added that the larger consumers of retread tyres were northern European nations, although in many cases the tyres were of Spanish manufacture.
TNU (promoted by Groupe Soledad) is making an effort to change that poor perception of retread tyres and the company is demonstrating to the public at exhibitions and proving by example

Research and Markets: 2012 Report on US Tyre Sector Published
Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Tire Manufacturing" report to its offering. The US tyre manufacturing industry consists of about 100 companies with combined annual revenue of about $15 billion. Major companies include Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin, and Cooper. The industry is highly concentrated: the top four companies generate more than 75 percent of revenue.
Demand is driven by sales of new vehicles and the need for replacement tyres. Because tyres are largely a commodity, profitability depends on cost-efficient operations. Small companies can compete by producing tyres or tyre-related products for niche markets, such as bicycles or farm equipment. Large companies can afford the research to develop tyres from new, technologically advanced materials, and can invest in
