New Marangoni Retreading Systems Winter Range
KRAIBURG Active in Re-Tyre project
Three new lines have been added to the Marangoni range of precured treads:
RDG101 ring for series 70 and 80 designed for central European climates;
RSY397 ring for long distances in extreme conditions;
MS9 special PRL
pattern for
Scandinavian countries. The RDG101 pattern is designed for use on drive axles on vehicles that travel on regional, national
and
international
routes. It is
suggested as
a new version
of the tried-
and-tested
RDG100, and
differs from the
latter in the fact that
it is bi-directional and
the tread has no wings.
It is an all season and multipurpose pattern, featuring a wide footprint to make it easier to adapt to continuous changes in the weather and road conditions during operation. The special “interlock” siping on the tread blocks ensures excellent control on wet, snow-covered and icy surfaces. This modern dimensional siping together with an increased tread depth gives this all season tread a high resistance to tearing and very regular tread wear. Marangoni Retreading Systems has extended the RSY397 line for applications in extreme winter conditions, successfully introduced last winter, with two new sizes: 275/70R22.5 and 315/70R22.5.
This is a specific profile for use on drive axles that are fitted on the vehicle at the start of winter and are then used continuously throughout the year. In their first phase of life, in fact, the tyre has an aggressive pattern that ensures safe travel even in extreme conditions; subsequently, as the tread wears, it takes on the characteristics of an all-position pattern for the remainder of the yearly cycle. The pattern features
deep grooves and a wide footprint with semi-rounded shoulders to guarantee good mileage and excellent stability on the road, thanks to the special siping that ensures excellent control on wet, snow-covered and icy surfaces.
The profile is approved by Yokohama.
Completing the winter range is a special
profile, the MS9, used in Nordic
countries. This is a modern
studdable M+S winter
tread, featuring excellent traction thanks to the numerous
transversal grooves. The
tyres are fitted in autumn to
guarantee maximum
mileage.
The Marangoni
winter range has been designed to provide
specific solutions for different road conditions during the winter, from the combination of wet, dry and snow-covered surfaces typical of central Europe to the extreme conditions found in the Nordic countries. Combining excellent performance on snow and ice with exceptional traction, the new generation range of tread profiles covers both regional and long distance applications.
The profiles are made using HP compounds suitable for low temperatures ensuring the best possible grip on typically tricky winter surfaces. The main advantages from using these special compounds include better rebound at low temperatures and reduced rolling resistance, as well as longer tread rubber life in extremely stressful conditions. HP compounds also allow the tyre to work at lower temperatures, ensuring reduced casing fatigue and longer life.
The extension and completion of the Marangoni winter range means all needs can be covered: from all- season profiles to patterns that can take on water, snow and ice.
Kraiburg Austria has an ongoing commitment to taking up and acting on the concerns of its customers. For this reason, the retreading specialist is also actively taking part in the BIPAVER "Re-Tyre" project alongside other associations, retreaders and testing institutes as the only material-supplier. “This participation is giving Kraiburg and its customers, the independent retreaders, the opportunity to actively observe and shape the process”, explains Thorsten Schmidt, CEO of Kraiburg Austria. And Kraiburg is the only one of Europe's leading material suppliers that does not run its own tyre operations. As an active retreading partner, the Upper Austrian company naturally wants the results to influence the development of its own products and materials.
Under the new statutory requirements, it is currently expected that retreaded tyres will also be required to comply with EU Regulations 661/2009 and 1222/2009.
Because of the significantly larger number of production variants offered by retreaders compared to new tyre manufacturers, a 100 percent transfer of the regulations that apply to new tyres would lead to costs for the retreaders that would not be economically feasible. “The consequence of this would be a drastic reduction in the number of independent retreaders and retreading would be more focused than ever on plant modernisation”, points out Thorsten Schmidt. It is therefore imperative for Kraiburg, as a materials manufacturer, to contribute to the drafting of regulations that:
• take account of the statutory requirements of Regulations 661/2009 and 1222/2009
• ensure that the costs to the retread industry remain economically viable
• ensure the survival of the independent retreaders
• and represent the value of high-quality retreaded tyres transparently and clearly
Tyre label opportunities
Despite the risks described above, Schmidt sees great opportunities for the independent retreading industr y to develop competitive advantages: “transparency about the rolling resistance, rolling noise and wet grip generated by the tyre label means better competitive positioning, especially for retreaders offering high-quality retreads and corresponding materials.” Kraiburg also expects that the tyre label should improve and strengthen the perception of the retread tyre as a high-quality product in the tyre market.
Kraiburg is initiating internal development processes
As a BIPAVER member, Kraiburg Austria is responsible for four areas within the EU project:
• participation in the "Technical Committee" on development of the work packages and coordination of the operational implementation of technical work packages (tyre production, testing, etc.)
• the development, production, procurement and testing of all materials required for the project
• production support by Kraiburg 's Technical Service
• support for external testing provided by the Technical Service
In parallel to "Re-Tyre" participation, Kraiburg is currently initiating internal development projects that aim to specify current Kraiburg products in comparison to the requirements of EU regulations 661/2009 and 1222/2009. This should produce development priorities for material, design and process development, thus enabling the fastest possible introduction of policy-compliant products and processes.
