Imperial Tire
Burns
Maynardville, Tennessee fire fighters spent several days dealing with a fire at Maynardville retreader Imperial Tire's warehouse recently. Union County fire department asked for help in fighting the fire, which sent thick, black smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles.
Maynardville, Union County, Rural/Metro, Paulette, and Knoxville Fire Departments all responded to the scene.
According to D.J. Corcoran with the Knoxville Fire Department, the fire was difficult to completely extinguish. KFD has battled a couple of similar blazes in the past. Corcoran said the tyres melt from the heat and form a crust and the fire continued to burn for a couple days under that crust.
The heavy black smoke contained polyvinyl carbons which can be toxic, however Corcoran said the smoke seemed to have dissipated from threat levels.
At one point the fire fighting teams were withdrawn from the vicinity due to the possible presence of explosive materials
