Tratamiento de Neumáticos Usados (TNU) and Asociación Española de Neumáticos Reciclados (AER) are organising a conference at Motortec, which will bring together experts in retreading in circular economy from Europe and Spain.
About the Conference
The conference will be held on April 24th at 11:30 AM in Auditorium 5 of IFEMA – MOTORTEC, hoping to address regulatory and political challenges of retreading, despite its environmental, social and economic benefits. National production of retreaded tyres declined by more than 50% in the last 20 years and the number of retreading plants reduced from 46 to 19. Meanwhile, the paradox persists: we recycle, but we do not consume recycled products.
Several experts from Europe and Spain will participate in a TNU and AER conference at Motortec:
- Guido Gambassi, President of the European Association of Retreading Manufacturers (BIPAVER), will address the current state of retreading in Europe, its main challenges and opportunities in the circular economy. He will analyse public policies already in place in other states.
- Javier de Jesús Landesa, Operational Director of TNU, will give an overview of the sector at the European level, providing data about decline and focusing on the tools needed to reverse this situation: tax and regulatory incentives, sustainable public procurement, import quality regulation and awareness campaigns.
- Daniel Martín-Montalvo Álvarez, Head of Circular Economy at the European Environment Agency (EEA), will explain the relationship between retreading and the European sustainability roadmap, while addressing its connection with ESG strategies, the challenges of unfair competition and the need for green taxation focused on the actual consumption of recycled products.
- Paolo Tosoratti, Directorate General for Energy at European Commission, will present the European regulatory developments in terms of mandatory labelling of retreaded tyres and ongoing legislative projects that aim to eliminate market barriers for these products.
- Timoteo de la Fuente García, Subdirectorate General for Quality and Industrial Safety at the Ministry of Industry and Toursim, will explain the integration of retreading into the ministry’s industrial policies, with a special emphasis on the circular economy, eco-design and green industrialisation.
- José Manuel Prieto Barrios, Directorate General for Industrial and SME Strategy, will participate in the debate to analyse which public policy instruments can promote the sustainable consumption of retreaded tyres and how to integrate circular criteria into public procurement.
- Salvador Pérez Vázquez, President of the AER, will make a direct appeal to government agencies to promote the use of retreaded tyres in public and private fleets, while emphasising that recycling is not enough: recycled products must be consumed.
- Salvador Pérez Lucena, International Sales Director of Grupo Soledad, will offer a business perspective: the challenges that manufacturers face, the need to differentiate products, innovation in technology, consumer education and establishment of strategic alliance with operators and government agencies.
At the end of the conference, there will be e debate on the most urgent measures that need to be implemented to stop the decline and consolidate the role of retreading within the new production model. The event will be moderated by María García de la Fuente, President of the Association of Environmental Information Journalists (APIA).
