Carling Eyes Business Expansion as Czech Retreading Market Bounces Back
The Czech tyre retreader Carling is considering plans to purchase new equipment to ramp up production capacities, Ivo Lojda, the company's logistics manager, said. During the past several years, retreading business in the country was hampered by the wide presence of cheap Chinese tyres, but the tables have turned with the beginning of the Covid- 19 pandemic, and now there is room for more retreads on the market.
"Tyre retreading was completely destroyed because transport companies forgot about retreads and opted to use cheap tyres imported from China," Lojda said, adding that the company experienced a slump in turnover in the retreading segment as quite a few transport companies saved spending money on tyres, citing concerns over their future.
Carling has been in the market since 1992, operating a plant near the city of Brno, serving national customers as well as customers in Slovakia. It´s main activity lies in the field of truck tyre retreading and providing technical assistance.
"We have been focusing on selling new Goodyear tyres, good quality Asian tyres, and producing premium quality retreaded tyres," Lojda said.
The retreading industr y seemed to be in depression in the Czech Republic for several years but is bouncing back now.
"Transport companies abandoned tyre retreading, and Carling sales representatives had to find the way to bring them back one by one," Lojda said. "Chinese tyre imports dropped due to increases in transport costs and antidumping duties.
Transport companies are looking to return to using retreaded tyres, just in the way they did some years ago".
"We see room in the market to replace Chinese goods. We plan to purchase new equipment to increase our production capacity in the retreading segment," Lojda added.
The Czech retreading market lacks bus casings, and the company has to source them on
the foreign markets. As explained by Carling’s management, when it comes to used tyres, Czech law is very strict, which adds challenges to the retreading business. "Carling works with several suppliers, including Vipal, Marangoni, and Goodyear," the company said.
