Recircle Awards: The Nominations Committee
The specially constituted Nominations Committee for the Recircle Awards, consisting of the respective editors of Retreading Business and Tyre & Rubber Recycling plus a further eight individuals from the global tyre retreading and recycling industries, was selected according to their independent status and their acknowledged expertise within their respective fields.
The role of the Committee was to select a short list of five candidates for each of the awards for which the voting process was open to the general public. The Committee select the short list from the many nominations received and based their judgement on the number of nominations received, the strength of the supporting arguments given by the nominating parties, as well their own expert knowledge of the individual nominees.
The Nominations Committee was made up as follows:
David Wilson: Publisher, Retreading Business and Tyre & Rubber Recycling
David Wilson has over 30 years’ experience as a journalist covering the tyre industry. He is the
owner and publisher of Retreading Business and Tyre & Rubber Recycling, the globally recognised journals for the tyre retreading and tyre recycling sectors, as well as being the Managing Director of
Valebridge Media Services.
Wilma Dierkes: Associate Professor Sustainable Elastomer Systems (SES), University of Twente
Wilma Dierkes is a chemist and environmental scientist. She has worked in R&D and Technical
Service for Rubber Resources (Netherlands) and as a product developer at Robert Bosch Produktie,
Belgium. Since 2001 she has worked at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, currently
as Associate Professor, and she has also held a professorship at the Tampere Technical University,
Finland. Her expertise is elastomer recycling and filler technology.
Guido Gambassi: Institutional Relations and Public Affairs Officer – AIRP
Guido Gambassi is Vice-Secretary of the Italian Retreaders Association, AIRP as well as being
Editor of Italy’s leading specialist journal for the tyre industry, Pneurama. In addition, he is a key
part of the organisational team for the Bologna- based trade exhibition, Autopromotec.
Daniel Rojas Enos: General Manager of the Chilean Association for Tyre Retreading and Renovation (ARNEC)
As ARNEC's manager since 2013, Daniel Rojas is responsible for the promotion of the retreading
process within the new Chilean legislation on Waste Management, Extended Producer
Responsibility (EPR) and the Promotion of Recycling.
Liana Shaw: Publisher and Editor of SA TREADS Digital
Liana Shaw has many years’ experience as a tyre industry journalist, establishing SA TREADS (the only dedicated tyre publication in Africa) 26 years ago. She also manages the International Tyre Portal
– www.satreads.com, which features fresh daily news on the South African and international tyre
business.
Michael Schwaemmlein: Technical Director of the German Tyre Dealers and Vulcanisers’ Association (BRV) and Technical Secretary BIPAVER
Michael Schwaemmlein has been active in the tyre industry since 1989 amassing experience in
tyre manufacturing, retreading, product management and fleet sales management with the
likes of Michelin, Kraiburg and Rema Tip Top as well as having several years’ experience as
BIPAVER’s Technical Consultant, before taking on his current role at the head of the BRV’s technical
department.
Ewan Scott: Editor, Tyre & Rubber Recycling
Ewan Scott has been the editor of Tyre & Rubber Recycling since its inception, as well as being a
long-term member of the editorial team for Retreading Business. With over 20 years’
experience as a tyre industry journalist, he also has three years’ experience as a consultant to ETRA and
was a key developer of the First Tyre Recycling Forum at The Tire, Cologne in 2018.
Valerie Shulman: Secretary General of the European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA)
Valerie Shulman began to study tyre recycling in the EU in 1989 and developed the Tyre Recycling
Project in 1992 which, after initial EU funding, became the nucleus of ETRA. A contributor to the
preparation and presentation of the 1999 Basel Convention Guidelines on used tyres, she has
served as Secretary General of ETRA for twenty-six years.
David Stevens: Managing Director, Tire Retread Information Bureau
David Stevens joined TRIB in November, 2010 following an almost two-decade long career
leading marketing, sales and customer service efforts for Fortune 500 companies in the US,
Japan and the United Kingdom. Today, he continues to be the voice of retreading in the
United States.
Martin von Wolfersdorff: Wolfersdorff Consulting Berlin
Martin von Wolfersdorff has operated as an independent consultant since 2014. An
acknowledged expert in tyre recycling, particularly in the area of pyrolysis, he has a wide client base
across all sectors of the chemical and materials industries.
