Tread Maker Expands into Patch and Tyre Manufacturing

North Indian tread producer Surya Rubber Industries has announced that it is to expand its product range by adding patches from the beginning of the next year. The coronavirus pandemic in the country has forced it to postpone the expansion to early 2021, otherwise, the range of patches for nylon and radial tyres would have hit the market by now.
“We have already ordered the required machinery for manufacturing patches but the lockdown to curb the spread of covid-19 delayed the arrival and installation of the equipment,” informed Bharat Mittal, Managing Director, Surya Rubber Industries.
The Uttar Pradesh-based tread producer has already restarted manufacturing tread rubber at its site after an almost two- month long lockdown. Now the site is 70% operational and will take some time to regain the peak production. It is expected to take another couple of months to operate the plant to capacity.
The tread maker also forayed into tyre manufacturing in a collaboration with VK Tyres two years ago, producing a range of tyres for bikes, scooters, e- rickshaws, farm equipment and ATVs in a 50:50 venture. About 40,000 tyres are being produced each month at VK Tyres site based in Murad Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.
“We have a new tyre range, tread rubber, bonding gum, and the idea is to sell patches also through our distribution network spread over 14 states.” Now the plan is to expand the tyre manufacturing collaboration alongside its
tread rubber site at Shamli in the next 2-3 years with initial production pegged at 10,000 tyres per month. It also has plans to export its tyre range to the East African market.
The tread production site is based at Shamli Industrial Area at Shamli in Uttar Pradesh. The plant is ideally located on the Shamli – Panipat Road and is merely 15 km from Haryana,
another North Indian state. The plant started way back in 1985, and Bharat Mittal joined the business in 2010.
“We have capacity to manufacture 150 tons of tread rubber per month, but we are currently producing in between 100 to 125 tons depending on the orders,” he said. The plant was also producing conventional rubber till last year but has been focusing
