EXHIBITIONS
resurrect the European economic framework from the consequences of this sanitary crisis."
Servadei’s response is not surprising, and indeed, Koelnmesse’s decision will leave many in the retreading sector in a quandary, forced to choose between the two events. in particular, suppliers to the sector will not relish the extra cost if they decide they need to invest in two exhibitions within the space of a fortnight, when the likelihood is that the visitor footfall will be be split between
the two events. Not only that, but the logistical issues involved with constructing, dismantling and shipping exhibition stands and equipment will not be welcomed.
For the national associations within the European retreading sector, whose members are used to a single annual event, the new arrangement is also likely to be problematic. One can imagine, for example, that strong words may well be exchanged among BIPAVER members, with the German BRV supporting Cologne and the Italian AIRP, also run by
Servadei, naturally supporting its own event.
As indicated by Servadei, the support of the many Italian garage equipment manufacturers, whose association AICA also has an interest in Autopromotec, may also be impacted.
One must wonder, therefore, whether the difficulties and disagreements that will inevitably arise from Koelnmesse’s decision were strictly necessary. Koelnmesse, of course, says they were. In asking the German exhibition organisers for the reasoning behind their decision,
Koelnmesse’s PR Chief Volker de Cloedt commented;
“First of all, the crisis really must be overcome. Regardless of this, there was no slot in our trade fair calendar for a date in the second half of 2020. When searching a new date for THE TIRE COLOGNE, we have to find a date that matches the rhythm of the industry in the interests of our exhibitors and visitors. Suspending THE TIRE COLOGNE now and only returning to it in June 2022 for rhythm reasons would mean a four-year interruption. But the industry needs a strong business platform, especially in phases of consolidation and major changes. And we want to offer this platform with THE TIRE COLOGNE. For scheduling there are of course numerous new dates of trade fairs worldwide which have to be taken into account and at the same time with the availability at our exhibition centre for holding an event of this size is limited. After all, a trade fair does not only consist of the actual duration of the fair, but also construction and dismantling times must be taken into account in the planning. After careful consideration of all options and feasibility, only a small time window remained in our 2021 trade fair calendar, which we then decided on.“
With regards to the clash with Autopromotec he added; „No question, the autopromotec is a strong fair. We do not want to build up unnecessary competition, but there was no alternative time schedule for us. The current crisis hits us all and we believe that after a hopefully soon improvement we all need strong fairs to boost business again. At first glance, two strong trade fairs in short succession are certainly burdensome for exhibitors at first glance, but from our point of view, after a crisis has been overcome, they are also the right and important impulse to bring the industry back to the forefront. And that helps everyone.“
