substantial restructuring in 2018, when it was announced that retread production at the Wem site would be ceased. At the time Kingpin was the last remaining passenger tyre retreader in the UK.
Following the restructuring, the company’s recycling business was separated from the retreading business to be managed by Jack Crangle’s daughter, Debbie Cartwright, and her husband Mark. In October 2018 the retreading plant was placed back under the temporary control of Jack’s son
Barry, who had been semi-retired, a move which allowed the company to review its customer needs, marketing strategy and production capacity.
Historically, the company had sold retreads via a network of wholesalers, but with the increasing competitiveness of the car tyre market, the company made the decision to sell its products direct to the retail trade.
Retreading Business wishes Jack Crangle all the very best for his well-earned retirement.

Jack Crangle Announces Retirement but Kingpin is Retreading Again
After 47 years at the helm of the UK-based passenger tyre retreader Kingpin Tyres, Jack Crangle, stalwart of the UK retreading industry, has announced his retirement from the company he founded in 1973. At the same time, it has been announced that the company’s retread plant in Wem, Shropshire, is
once again operational under the management of Jack’s grandson, Jonathan Crangle.
Following a successful period of expansion into tyre recycling in the early part of the current century, carried out in part to offset the contraction in the passenger retread market, the company underwent
signed a year ago between the company and Italian equipment manufacturer TRM. The Robotic cell Black Constrictor Twin, described by TRM as the most innovative production cell for the cold cure process, was scheduled to be installed at the beginning of 2020 with a production start expected in the first quarter.
The combination of the extensive use of Black Swan, a vertical extruder with strip winding technology, and Twin, a double hydraulic chuck on a rotary turret, both TRM's exclusive technology, has made it possible to divide the activities into multiple stations with a high level of quality and efficiency. The production cell is assisted by an anthropomorphic robot that

The building machine has continuous stretch control during the tread application, its length being distributed evenly above the carcass, avoiding any material excess in the joint area for better uniformity and quality of the final product.
After the building, a second extruder station with a Double Black Swan applies the compound strips on the sidewall for a full bead to bead retreading process. Managed by one operator only the machine can achieve an hourly output of 130 tyres per shift.
