productivity to be achieved in the retreading process. This investigation revealed that buffing is an important "bottleneck". It represents 15 per cent of the total time (excluding curing) and requires up to two operators in difficult conditions.
On the basis of these results, the mandate was given to the engineers of the technical centre at Rome to design an automated solution.
The new machine, named Leonardo, is inspired by the robotic machines of the mechanical industry. It is part of a closed environment. Before being introduced into the station by the arm of the robot, the carcass of the tyre is measured, then scanned to identify the impacts, the defects to be treated, using an image processing software coupled to a camera. A buffer makes a first pass on each unit. Another camera then determines any traces of rust, which are eliminated by a conventional grinding wheel without damaging the metal belt of the tyre.
Each defect is processed in ten seconds. With around fifty defects
per tyre on average, the saving of time is not negligible compared to human intervention. It can take up to thirty minutes to treat a hundred skives. This 250,000 Euro unclamping robot is the first to be installed in a retreading plant. It has been in production since the beginning of the year. Others will be installed at the request of Bandag network licensees. Its first months of use have demonstrated its impact in terms of improving quality, increasing productivity, reducing environmental pollution and improving working conditions.
The installation of this robot is justified from at least 15,000 tyres per year according to Bridgestone. The Chaponost plant processes 65,000 to 70,000 tyres. This innovation should also reduce customer returns, which have already been "halved in ten years", according to statistics provided by Stéphane Bilot, Bridgestone’s head of tyre retreading for France and the Benelux.
Lukatec Launches ROI-Tread HS 6011 Cushion Gum Extruder
Lukatec has announced the launch of its latest cushion gum extruder: the ROI-TREAD HS 6011. In addition to the HS 6011 model, the company has also launched the Compact 6007 and Compact 6005 models. By adding these launches to the already established models ROI-TREAD M, 100M, 200M and 300M, Lukatec is now able to offer what it says is the most complete line of cushion extruders in the market.
The modular concept of the ROI- TREAD line allows customers to choose the model that best meets their production needs. There are more than 7 models available, allowing the combination of cushion gum extrusion and building/stitching process in the same equipment. One of the highlights is the 200M model that combines one extruder with two builders/stitchers, providing greater production and significant reduction of non-productive times, positioning this equipment as the most efficient option on the market.
Every ROI-TREAD model has the RPX smearing technology developed exclusively by Lukatec. Precise controls and equipment strength offer the greatest return on
investment for your treads.
More about the ROI-TREAD line can be found at Lukatec’s new website for the equipment: www.roi-tread.com.

Featured products included precured treads from Ruzi, one of the leading companies in the tyre retread market, acquired by Vipal Rubber in 2002. Recauchutagem Idua, from the Portuguese city of Fafe, was the company responsible for
countries. “Recauchutagem Idua has been with us since 2010 and, more recently, has opened a space fully identified with the brand. Today, it is a company with a scope not only in Portugal, but also in France, which makes us very satisfied, since the tyres retreaded with Ruzi products are also going to other cities, such as Paris, where the retreader partners distribute tyres with the brand’s applications,” said Fabricio Nedeff, Vipal Rubber’s Business Coordinator in Europe.
