THE TIRE
The Tire Cologne – A Winning Move
When it was announced that the BRV would be removing support from the Essen show and putting its efforts into The Tire at Cologne, the industry was dubious about its chances of success. This was particularly the case in the early days when Messe Essen vowed to continue to stage the traditional tyre show.
However, the commercial realities set in as exhibitors put their money on the horse they were prepared to back, and the Essen show dropped out of the running, though the Reifen brand is being attached to Automechanika at Frankfurt. This left The Tire as the only dedicated tyre industry show in Europe.
There were doubters across the industry and some played a waiting game, some left it too late to exhibit, some after the show decided that “next time” they would be there.
The event, which ran from 29th May to 1st June 2018 at Koelnmesse was, without question, an upgrade to what the tyre sector had become used to. Big, spacious, clean halls, ample parking close at hand, good hotels and transport connections. And all this a bridge away from the bustling heart of one of Germany’s leading tourist cities.
According to Koelnmesse’s statement, the show gave a good performance from the start with a convincing visitor quality attracted by a clear event concept allied with new themes and services.
The show gave home to the Global Tyre Retreading Conference, the future Tyre Conference, The Tyre Recycling Forum and, with 530 exhibitors from 40 countries, the event attracted some 16,000 visitors from 113 different countries.
The retreading industry and the burgeoning recycling sector had a dedicated hall where the retread and recycling exhibitors could mix, network and meet and greet customers specifically interested in these areas.
A first for the show was the creation of a Recycling Forum, a theatre that attracted a great deal of interest from those with a view on end of life tyres, drawing audiences as high as 50 people throughout the three days of the Forum, and on the Friday, exhibitors were able to take to the stage to promote their own products and services to the market. Since the show closed its doors, Retreading Business has heard several who elected not to exhibit saying that they would be sure to put the 2020 event in their diaries.
to less than one minute, Dengler said. In the same way, it is hard to imagine now that in 1973 the average cost of the inspection process was close to 10 Euro per tyre. In 1998 it was reduced to between 0.05 Euro to 0.15 Euro and in 2018 it was further cut to between 0.02 Euro to 0.05 Euro per tyre.
One of the challenges for SDS in making state-of-the-art tyre inspection machines lies in the area of standardisation of test procedure and validation. In this case, the test parameters must be defined either within one company or within the industr y, Dengler explained. After that, the information about test conditions must be input into the software, so SDS could supply it within the single Automated Processes solution to its customers. And in order to get a reproducible
contour is based on tyre data, such as radius, outer radius, rim height and shoulder height, as well as machine parameters, including angle of viewing and the camera position.
All in all, with its modern machines SDS is offering its customers a combination of two systems, Automatic Anomaly Detection and Tyre Contour Detection. This allows it to effectively detect the structural anomalies in casings, such as fatigue or broken cables, verify tyre repairs and to conduct geometrical measurement, according to Dengler. The other advantage is that the operator has no need to touch the tyre, while the test pressure remains low, not exceeding 4 bar, and the test results are stored within the software, so they are fully traceable for any future operations.
what is called the Speckle-Shearing technology, this includes a CMOS camera and Laser Diodes. As compared to the previous machines used to conduct shearography in the past, it has numerous advantages as it requires no consumables, such as film or chemicals, needs less maintenance time and consumes less energy.
The bead-to-bead cycle time per tyre was 10 minutes in 1973 and six minutes in 1998. The modern Twin Machine has now reduced that
validation it is important to define all the necessar y criteria for the process. This involves the standards that are different between companies, according to Dengler. So, ever y customer must have what is called “the anomaly library”.
SDS believes that for the fully automatic detection of anomalies within tyre zones, the contour of ever y tyre tested is required. In modern ITTs, one of which SDS brought to its stand at the Cologne Tyre Expo the calculation of the tyre
SDS Keeps Making Shearography More Effective
TIA: Supporting the Future of Tyre Retreading and Recycling
When it comes to shearography, retreading plants are mostly interested in three things, namely the accuracy, the cycle time per tyre and the costs. Modern tyre inspection machines are constantly getting better on each of these parameters, not in the least extent due to the efforts of SDS Systemtechnik Gmbh on upgrading its Interferometric Tyre Testers, or ITTs, said Stefan Dengler, the
managing director with SDS.
Since 1998 and up to April 2018, SDS has supplied ITT systems to 286 truck tyre retreaders, 3 OTR tyre retreaders and 35 aviation tyre retreaders, Dengler informed. There are 105 ITT systems currently in operation in Europe, 150 in the U.S., four in Japan and two in China, he added.

Another dedicated tyre retreading association supporting the new Tire Cologne event was North American based – Tire Industr y Association (TIA), and Roy Littlefield – Executive Vice President along with Joseph Heath – Technical Manager explained to Retreading Business that it was absolutely essential for TIA to
take a stand at this ground-breaking show.
Littlefield says, “The TIA strongly represents all segments of the tyre industr y including manufacturing, repairs and recycling so we are here to meet as many visitors as possible to emphasise our commitment to the on-going and future promotion
