the improvement of the road safety. At the moment, less than 10 per cent of tyres in Russia make it to the retreading plants, and the new
system can change this situation, and significantly increase this figure, the press-service said.
 King-Crown Schedules Expansion for 2018
St. Petersburg-based truck tyre retreader LLC King-Crown has scheduled a major expansion of production capacities for 2018, intending to increase its operational performance by at least two times. This is in spite of the heavy challenges Russia’s retreading plants currently have to deal with, the director of the company’s
retreading plant, Dmitry Tolyarenko informed. Founded more than 300 years ago, St. Petersburg has been named ‘a Russian window to Europe’, reflecting the intention of the Russian Tsars to instill a western culture, values and a way of life, throughout the country, but in the first place in its capital.
Although, the city is not the Russian capital anymore, the expression of a ‘window to Europe’ remains widely- known and commonly used, because in the opinion of its citizens, St. Petersburg is the most European
Russian city, and it is much more European than even Moscow.
Partly because of this, St. Petersburg became a pioneer of the retreading business in the modern history of the Russian Federation, and now, according to Tolyarenko the city and surrounding regions, still do account for the largest number of retreading plants amongst all Russian provinces. The first retreading plant in the region was opened by Nokian Tyres nearly two decades ago, Tolyarenko recalled. The company started cooperating with the large transport companies, estimating how much money they could save under better tyre management. At that time, most transport companies were using tyres for as long as possible, sending them to the landfill afterwards. King-Crown has several sister companies across Russia, so it is able to compare the situation with casings and respectively with the retreading
industry in various of the country’s regions.
For example, in Yekaterinburg, the capital of the Russia’s Ural federal district, tyre management leaves a lot to be desired, but the worst situation in the country probably is being seen in the Russia’s South, where there are virtually no casings appropriate for retreading.
“All in all, we see that the attitude depends on the size of transport fleet in every particular region. The more trucks registered in the region, the better the culture of tyre management. In south the drivers are instructed to use tyres, virtually until they blow out,” Tolyarenko
admitted.
Additionally, in Moscow and St. Petersburg the quality of highways is much better than in most provinces, and this factor also must be taken into account, because the truck tyres “are getting killed” operating on the bad roads even under good management, according to Tolyarenko.
However, the quality of access roads, as well as the roads in small towns and villages is still not comparable to Europe, and this could be listed among the key problems for the retreading industry.
