To be approved by Inmetro for use in passenger vehicles, the retreaded tyre must have a minimum of 6 mm groove in the tread, while for commercial purposes the minimum depth is 8 mm. The wear indicator must also be present and be at least 1.6 mm high for both categories, with a tolerance of up to 0.6 mm for more.
Pneus São Miguel situated in Ponta Delgada, is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary as a Bandag retreader, the oldest retreader in the Azores.
As a Bandag retreader, São Miguel Tires contributes greatly to recycling by increasing the life of the used tyre, thus delaying millions of truck and bus tyres from being landfilled every year.
In addition, Pneus São Miguel sends all rubber waste from its factory to companies that use it as raw material.
The ceremony to deliver the commemorative plaque for the 25th anniversary was attended by two representatives of Bridgestone Bandag who came to Ponta Delgada.
Beneficial Cooperation between Newera and SDS
Portuguese rubber specialists and retread materials group, Empobor, has finally closed with the declaration of insolvency being issued by the Commercial Court of the Judicial Court of the Comarca de Leiria.
According to reports from the court the closure of what was Portugal’s largest rubber group, will see some 84 staff finally made redundant. Empobor had been trading since 1972 and Borvul since 1981.
A few years ago, Newera and SDS started working hand in hand to provide tyre test solutions. Today Newera is the distributor and service partner for the Southeast Asia region.
Newera is handling the complete product range of SDS including the ITT series for shearographic tyre
testing, profile measuring systems for tyre components, wear measurement systems and other equipment.
Trained and experienced technicians from Newera guarantee the support and best availability at site.

Brazil’s New Retread Laws Now Effective
German tyre wholesaler and retreader Reiff has been subject to an EC inquiry into its purchase by US-based private equity fund Bain Capital Investors LLC.
At the end of August, the Commission approved the sale after determining that the limited overlap between Bain and Reiff would create no competition issues.
The new owner has stated that the intention is to become a regional leader within the European tyre sector.
Bain Capital’s acquisition of Reiff Reifen und Autotechnik will be carried out by its European Tyres Distribution Limited platform holding company, which was established for the purpose of consolidating replacement tyre distribution operations across Europe. The London-based company acquired Italian wholesaler Fintyre in March 2017.
It is expected that the combined revenues of the Group will exceed 750 million Euros. Bain is open to further acquisitions.
In 2015 Brazil introduced Ordinance 554 that regulated the retreading of tyres. That law became effective on the 29th October 2017. The law establishes minimum parameters for retreaded, or refurbished tyres to be released for use on public roads.
Now retreaded tyres in Brazil will have to carry Inmetro's Conformity
Identification Seal, stating the type of service performed (retreading or remoulding), date of repair and number of repairs already performed on that casing. To be qualified for repair, the tyre cannot be more than seven years of age, in addition, there is a determination for the maximum number of reuses that each type of tyre can have:
