high of nearly 98,000 units in 2013, but has fallen back since.
An indication of the reason behind the decline in the truck sector can be seen in a sixteen-year price index published by the association, which shows the price of a new Michelin XZE2 in 295 and 315 sizes compared to a COC retread base on both items having a price level of 100 in the year 2000. Whereas in 2013 the price
index stood at 151 for the retread and 161 for the new tyre, this had switched to 152 for the retread and only 144 for the new tyre in 2016. This was down to a squeezing of new tyre prices, which manifested itself as a 3-year continuous reduction in the price index figure for new tyres, following 13 years of continuous growth.
As part of our strategy to upgrade and expand our social media presence Retreading Business has now developed a presence on three of the most popular social media platforms – Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
The magazine can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ RetreadingBusiness/, on Twitter at @RetreadBusiness and on LinkedIn at Retreading Business.
At the same time, social media profiles have also been established for our two other UK-based magazine titles, Tyre & Rubber Recycling and Commercial Tyre Business and the two titles owned by our Malaysian sister company Valebridge Publications (Asia) Sdn Bd, The Tyreman and Truck & Bus News. According to Publisher David Wilson, the move is part of a plan to integrate the activities of the individual print magazines with their respective digital versions, e- newsletter activity and a strong presence on the key social media platforms.
Says Wilson; “Publishing is about more than just having a successful print magazine. Nowadays readers are just as likely to access news stories and comment articles on their computer or on their mobile phones. Our aim is to give the readers of Retreading Business a comprehensive information service, allowing them to use the media they are most comfortable with, whilst also allowing us to be more efficient and successful in reaching our core readers on a worldwide basis.” Responsible for developing and integrating the digital media activities
of all five magazines will be Richard Wilson, who now joins the company on a full-time basis.

B&J Rocket Restructures Danish Operation
Tyre retreading tool manufacturer B&J Rocket has announced that it is streamlining the organisation at its production site in Tarm, Denmark.
As a result, Bent Toft Andersen, who held the position of General Manager Manufacturing, has left the company with effect from 27

 TRMAM Celebrates Tenth Anniversary
The Tyre Retreading Manufacturers’ Association of Malaysia (TRMAM) celebrated its 10th anniversary at the Taman Rahsna Restaurant in Klang, Malaysia recently. There
were about 400 guests, including members, MATRDS representatives, retreading equipment suppliers and the media.
“Globalisation and
open trading have
facilitated the gradual
reduction of import
tariffs,” said TRMAM
President Chin Hon
Meng. The lack of
monitoring and enforcement by the authority have resulted in a local market that is flooded with cheap and low- quality Chinese new tyres. This has affected the healthy development of the Malaysian retreading industry on a certain level. These cheap imports are low in quality and many are not retreadable. What is even worse is that whenever the public sees tyre debris, they associate it with retreaded tyres. Thus, TRMAM has held press conferences to straighten the matter, educate the public and urge the authorities to protect the best interests and ensure the healthy development of the industry,” he added.
Currently, he said, there were more than 90 retreaders in Malaysia, and all of TRMAM’s members had already obtained MS224 certification. The rising cost of rubber and related
raw materials were driving tyre production costs higher, he added. After absorbing some additional costs, the tyre retreaders had no

choice but to adjust their sales price, without sacrificing quality. He said the selling price of retreaded tyres had increased by 15 per cent, effective from 1st Jan, 2017. He also urged retreaders who were yet to be members to join the Association and make their voices louder. The 10th anniversary dinner also served as a Chinese New Year Gathering for the members and guests.
Also present were Malaysian Association of Tyre Retreaders & Dealers Societies (MATRDS) Honorary Advisor Dato’ Seri Cheah Eu Kiat, Malaysian Rubber Products Manufacturers Association (MRPMA) President Dato’ Ong Eng Long and TRMAM Vice President Kew Kuik Tin. The highlights included the Inauguration Ceremony of TRMAM Committee Members (2016/2018), cake cutting and toasting as well as entertainment.
In its annual report, the Finnish Tyre Specialists Association Autonrengasliitto has reported a continued decline in truck retread sales in 2016. According to the Association 147,777 truck and bus tyres were retreaded in Finland in 2016 compared to 159,969 in 2015 and 169,064 in 2014, when the marked experienced a mini-recovery
in the sector.
One piece of good news for the sector came in the light truck sector, which showed a 6.6 per cent increase to 1648 units. Passenger retreading showed further decline and now stands at 52,054 units, a similar level to 2007. Passenger retreading had enjoyed something of a renaissance in Finland reaching a
