Sustrend: Accessing the Carbon Markets for the Retreading Sector
Europe.
“Europe was first in the Kyoto Protocol but the continent has never really looked properly into individual industries. Small industries like the retreading industry incorrectly tend to think that it’s not possible for small industries to be able to
access the carbon markets.”
In addition to the USA, Munoz says Sustrend is also interested in finding out more about the situation in Australia – perhaps even in China where they will soon be moving from a selling position to a buying position.
Sustrend, based in Vina del Mar, is rather unique in the retreading industry in that it offers a consulting service to individual retreaders and to national retreading industries, to allow them to accurately measure their carbon footprint, and then to help them trade those environmental assets on the carbon markets.
The company, which is part of the business group owned by Dario Andreani, is headed up by Lorena Munoz Del Campo, and is able to measure the amount of CO2 made by each part of the retreading process. Munoz carried out this process initially at INSAMAR and is now looking to develop the system worldwide.
What Sustrend does is develop a Project Category Rule (PCR) for individual industries – this is the rule which forms part of the ISO 14001 process. This then allows each industry’s carbon footprint to be certified
strategy for selling the environmental assets. Sustrend can do all of this.
In Chile Sustrend has been instrumental in helping ARNEC to negotiate the APL agreement with the Clean Production Agency. The aim is to standardise the process for the whole industry though the agreement, which will allow the validation of the industry’s
CO2 reduction at government level.
According to ARNEC, what Munoz did for them was to help open doors, as she is able to speak the language of the environment agencies. Sustrend, for example, was able to equate the saving made by the retreading industry to the active extraction of biogas from the municipal dump at Valparaiso. Following the ALARNEU meeting in Cancun a year ago, Sustrend is now also working with ARAN, the Argentinian Retreaders Association. The

The company also possesses a thermo-acoustic sheet production plant from Salvadori, which is proving to be a particularly interesting sector.

so that it can trade on the carbon markets. The idea is that this ability will help retreaders compete more effectively with Chinese tyres
According to Munoz the covers several stages a) studying the market and the processes prevalent in each market b) evaluating the PCR – usually involving data collection from retreaders C) Calculating the CO2 savings d) standardising the industry where necessary e) structuring and creating a
company also has a similar project underway for the Mexican Agricultural Plastics Recycling Association. In addition, Dario Andreani is currently in California with a view to setting up an office there.
As far as Europe is concerned, Ssutrend has talked to the Spanish Retreaders Association following Dario Andreani’s presentation in Bologna. However, Munoz’s impression is that it’s more difficult in
materials made from recycled tyres.
Polambiente, which recycles 7,000 tonnes of scrap tyres per annum at its plant in Santiago, produces tyre chips using an Eldan Super Chopper. It then produces
