In Angola the term retreading has been synonymous with roadside repairs and for many years the Angolan government has doled out funds to prop up backstreet repair shops. However, retreading has been
taking a turn towards the professional route in recent months. Firstly, Portuguese retreader Nortenha has bitten the bullet and taken on an investment of 1.8M Euro to establish a truck tyre retreading plant in premises owned by Lisbon-based group Moto-Engil The venture brings together the Mota-Engil Group and Caixa Capital Ventures.
José Gomes of Nortenha Retreading, told Portuguese news agency Lusa that the plant to be built in Angola will have a very specific action "and is going to concentrate its activities
in the area of off-road tyres and tyres specifically for mining."
Nortenha Retreading has an annual turnover of 21.5 million euros and already exports to the Netherlands, France, UK, Austria, Sweden, France
and Spain, where it obtains 30 per cent of its turnover.
In a parallel venture the Angolan Minister of Industry, Bernarda Martins announced support for industry fundamental to the growth of the economy with the opening of truck tyre retreading plant at an estimated cost of $1.08 million. The new plant will provide truck tyre retreading services and repair tyres with the hot cure system as well as selling new tyres. The company named, "Pneuang", will produce up to 10,000 tyres per year in its first phase of operation.
AutoXpress, Kenya’s leading supplier of tyres, wheels, batteries, suspension parts and provider of wheel alignment and wheel balancing services has opened a KES 150 Million state-of- the-art facility housing its Marangoni Retread plant, fleet solutions division and a training school, located on Mombasa Road at the Savanna Business Park.
that assures a retread product that is equivalent in performance and safety to that of brand new premium tyres. “Fleet operators who use top quality Marangoni retreads consistently achieve much lower costs per kilometre due to extended tyre life and savings in fuel consumption derived from low rolling resistance tread,” said Mr. Sandeep Shah, M.D.
The move is part of the company’s mission to strengthen its leading position in the market through the expansion of its product range and services.
As the East African economies mature, logistics solutions become increasingly more important. AutoXpress says it recognises the need for efficient solutions and support that assist in controlling the operations of vehicle fleets while improving efficiency and productivity simultaneously.
During the official inauguration of the new facility, the M.D., Mr. Sandeep Shah, explained the reason for investing in a world class retreading facility.
“By the beginning of 2013, it was increasingly clear to us that should we wish to sustain the rapid growth that AutoXpress had experienced over the previous 10 years, we needed to introduce a cost effective retread tyre solution that would meet and exceed
