Daniels, who owns Rimrock Tire in Cody, Wyo., and a retail tyre store in Powell, Wyoming. Daniels is bucking that trend. Last December, he purchased the Goodyear store in Billings and renamed it Rimrock Tire. He retreads about 24 tyres per day in Cody and is aiming for twice as many in Billings.
After the last oil boom ended in the early 1980s, Hi-Mile was shipping 50 retreads every other week to western
North Dakota and Eastern Montana. Now with the Bakken boom, the company ships as many as 250 tyres each week to these oil fields during the peak summer and fall months. Hi-Mile manager Rees said retreads make up as much as 40 percent of his company's business. “The Bakken sales bump is nice”, he said, “but no one knows how long it will continue”.

BRV Reports Drop in Tyre Sales But Boost For Retreading
According to Peter Hülzer, executive chairman of the Association Germany’s BRV, some 55 million replacement tyres were sold in Germany in 2012 - some six million less than last year. "The past year was anything but a good year for our industry," he said.
In the highest-volume car segment of the trade was lower than in the previous year by more than ten per cent.
In comparison, sales in the off-road tyre segment were downright positive. 3.13 million units were sold, of which around 48 per cent summer, the rest of winter tyres. While "This represents only a minimal increase in sales of 0.3 percent and is far removed from the over 20 per cent growth, of the previous year. But this product segment is the only new tyre one that showed a positive development, "said BRV Chief Hülzer.
For commercial vehicles, the unit sales of light truck tyres (light truck) decreased compared to the previous year by two percent to 3.45 million. Three-fifths of them were new tyres, the rest retreaded. That sales of truck
tyres declined by more than 14 percent, probably due to sustained high cost sensitivity in the freight forwarding industry. As in previous years it was observed that retreaded truck tyres were finding increased attention.
Also in the niche segments of tyres for earthmoving machines (EM) tyres and agricultural vehicles (tractors, abbreviated AS tyres) the sales trend for the industry was anything but encouraging. Sales of EM tyres fell by ten per cent year on year, the demand for agricultural tyres suffered a five per cent decrease in 2011 to another drop of 12 per cent in 2012.
The expectations for the tyre replacement business in 2013 are characterised by cautious optimism. Here is the forecast by segment:
- Car Tyres + 2.7 percent
- Off-road tyres + 15.0 percent
- Light truck tyres + 4.6 percent
- Truck tyres up 4.2 percent
- Motorcycle tyres + 4.8 percent
- AS-drive-wheel tyres + 5.0 percent - EM tyres + 5.0 percent.
